Wilston moves, front to back

Wilston sits about 5 kilometres north of the Brisbane CBD. Enoggera Creek forms its southern boundary, and from there the suburb rises to the elevated slopes of Eildon Hill, still regarded as a very good address. It grew mostly between the wars, and Wilston Village on Kedron Brook Road is still its main shopping strip.

In the 2021 Census, separate houses made up 70.3 per cent of Wilston's occupied private dwellings, and 42.1 per cent of homes had four or more bedrooms, against 38.8 per cent across Queensland. Flats and apartments made up 20.9 per cent.

Every Wilston quote starts with the block: where the truck can stand, how the ground falls, and what sits behind the main house. The rate is $125 to $169 an hour + GST for a moving truck and two professional movers, with blankets, trolleys, straps and wrap included.

Uanda, a heritage-listed 1928 cottage on Clifton Street, shows what a sloping block does to a house. Its land falls from Newmarket Road towards Enoggera Creek. The house sits on concrete stumps about a metre above the ground at the front, and higher at the back as the ground drops away.

A house like that has two very different ends on moving day:

• An easy front, a tall back. The front steps may be short while the rear stairs to a deck, laundry or yard are long. We count both.
• Under-house storage. The space under a raised house often holds the heaviest things: tools, outdoor settings, bikes and spare furniture. Include it in your inventory.
• Uphill to the street. If the yard sits below the street, everything from the back travels uphill to the truck. We plan the route, the trolleys and the crew to match.
• Clear charges. Where a stair charge applies, it is $48 including GST per flight, confirmed before you book.

Wilston's heritage register is a good reminder that one property can hold more than one building. The timber building at 11 Hewitt Street, designed by Robin Dods, is thought to have been the servants' quarters for Rayham, barrister Austin Douglas Graham's 1899 home. Rayham itself was later moved a short distance to Harle Avenue, and the quarters appear to have been turned 90 degrees on their site.

We move contents, not houses. But if your property includes a studio, granny flat, home office or a garage full of gear, plan it as part of the main move:

• Inventory each building separately, with an estimate of cartons and large pieces in each.
• Photograph the path from each building to the truck, including gates, steps and surfaces.
• Label work items by destination. Keep business documents and equipment apart from household cartons so they arrive where you need them.
• Book trades first. Disconnecting hard-wired or plumbed equipment is licensed trade work we don't do.

Wilston Village on Kedron Brook Road is the main retail area, Wilston station is on the Ferny Grove line, and St Columba's primary school is also on Kedron Brook Road. Between shoppers, commuters and the school run, kerb space near the village can be in demand.

Council also lists Wilston among the suburbs in Regulated Parking Permit Areas, where signs in individual streets set the rules and permit holders are exempt.

• Read the signs outside your home and tell us any time limits or permit rules.
• Avoid the school run near Kedron Brook Road where you can, with a mid-morning arrival on school days.
• Arrange any permit or loading zone early. Parking and permit costs are passed on.

Not every move goes far. Wilston and Grange share the 4051 postcode, and Kalinga and Wooloowin are a short drive east. A move of a few streets still deserves the full plan.

• The clock runs the same. On a short move, loading and unloading take most of the time, so access at both ends matters more than the distance.
• One load or two? An extra trip between loading and unloading is $48 including GST, so it usually pays to fit everything into one planned load.
• Moving some things yourself? Tell us what you're taking, so the truck and crew are sized to what's left.
• Unpacking straight away. Our unpacking and setup team can start at the new home as soon as the truck is empty.

• Into the city. The CBD is about 5 kilometres south, and Lutwyche Road has long been the main northern route.
• The Gold Coast. The Clem7 tunnel connects at its northern end with Lutwyche Road and the Inner City Bypass, and at its southern end with the Pacific Motorway. We move between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in both directions.

• $48 incl. GST each, where they apply: stair flights, appliances, items over 90 kg, hoisting, a truck-inaccessible driveway, an extra pick-up or drop-off, or an extra trip.
• Pianos: $149 incl. GST on top of the hourly rate, subject to an access assessment.
• Waste disposal: by weight and type, from a minimum of $95 incl. GST, through our junk removal service.
