Camp Hill removalists for family homes

Camp Hill sits 8.1 kilometres south-east of the Brisbane CBD by road, and its name is a clue to the job. Complaints about the steep climb and poor roads once led to public works on what was called the Four Mile Camp Hill, later shortened to Camp Hill. The suburb is still hilly. Whites Hill, in the south, rises to 112 metres above sea level.

The homes are large, too. In the 2021 Census, 84.4 per cent of Camp Hill's occupied private dwellings were separate houses, and 47.4 per cent had four or more bedrooms. Most moves here are whole households, often with a slope or a flight of steps between the front door and the truck.

So we start with the property. How many steps lead up from the street? Does the driveway climb or fall away? Which pieces have to come down internal stairs? Then the price is simple: $125 to $169 an hour + GST for a moving truck and two professional movers, with larger crews and trucks available for bigger homes.

Brisbane City Council's heritage records note that Camp Hill did not develop as a residential suburb until the 1920s. Estates were auctioned in waves, and the tram line from Coorparoo reached Camp Hill in 1925. Character still matters here: in 2021 Council adopted a planning amendment devoted to Camp Hill's zoning, heritage and character, including updates to its Traditional building character overlay.

Older homes rarely stay exactly as built. Council records two Federation bungalows on the old Croydon Park Estate that were converted into flats and later returned to single homes: Eastholme on Watson Street, flats from 1953 and a house again from 1974, and the Collins Residence on Lloyd Street, converted in the early 1960s and since restored to one dwelling.

For moving day, that means we plan from the house as it is now, not as it was drawn:

• Show us the real route. Photos of the front entry, internal stairs and any step between the original house and a newer extension help us plan the carry.
• Measure the tight spots. Older hallways and doorways can be narrower than modern furniture. We dismantle beds, tables and desks when that's the safer way through, then reassemble them at the new address.
• Protect the finishes. Quilted blankets and pads go on before anything moves past timber floors, painted walls or glazed doors.

A four-bedroom house holds more than its furniture: wardrobes, a kitchen's worth of glass and ceramics, a garage and years of paperwork. Our packing service can take on the whole house or just the rooms you'd rather not do yourself.

• Full or partial packing. We can pack the kitchen and fragile items while you do the rest, or pack everything.
• High-care items. Glassware, mirrors, framed art and ceramics are wrapped properly. Bubble wrap and dish paper are supplied on request at no extra charge.
• Room-by-room labels. Cartons are marked for the room they're going to, so the crew can put them straight in place at the other end.
• Sort before you pack. Our junk removal service takes furniture, mattresses, whitegoods and clutter you don't want to move. Disposal is charged by weight and type, from a minimum of $95 including GST. Hazardous materials, chemicals, asbestos and gas bottles are excluded.

At the new home, our unpacking service reverses the process: cartons placed, beds rebuilt and used packing taken away.

Old Cleveland Road is Camp Hill's spine. It runs 19.3 kilometres from Stones Corner to Capalaba, and buses use it frequently and for long hours, with the suburb's main stop at Bruce Street. Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School fronts it at number 676, and Whites Hill State College is on Burn Street.

If your home is on or near a busy road, plan where the truck will stand:

• Choose the loading spot early. A driveway or a quieter side street is often better than the kerb of a main road. Tell us what's available and how far it is from your front door.
• Work around the school run. If you live near either school, we can plan loading outside drop-off and pick-up times.
• Keep bus stops clear. They aren't loading space, so we plan around them.
• Arrange permits if needed. Customers organise any parking permit or loading zone, and those costs are passed on.

Access charges are priced openly. Where a stair charge applies it is $48 including GST per flight, and a truck-inaccessible driveway is $48 including GST. Both are confirmed before you book.

Camp Hill borders Norman Park, Seven Hills, Carina, Carina Heights, Holland Park and Coorparoo, so many local moves are short drives with full-size loads.

• Next door. Moves between Camp Hill and Norman Park or Seven Hills are quick on the road but often house to house, with stairs at both ends.
• East to the Redlands. Old Cleveland Road runs east all the way to Capalaba, across Tingalpa Creek from Brisbane, for moves into the Redlands.
• The Gold Coast. Old Cleveland Road has an interchange with the Gateway Motorway, which joins the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Eight Mile Plains. We move between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in both directions.

• Piano relocation: $149 including GST on top of the hourly rate, subject to an access assessment.
• Travel is charged depot-to-depot or as a call-out fee. Parking and permit costs are passed on, and waiting time is chargeable.
