Chandler removalists for acreage living

Chandler sits 16.4 kilometres south-east of the Brisbane CBD by road. Its eastern boundary is Tingalpa Creek, and its easternmost point is the easternmost point of the City of Brisbane mainland. Much of its 13 square kilometres is bushland and residential acreage, and the suburb has stayed semi-rural.

The homes reflect that. In the 2021 Census, 99.6 per cent of Chandler's occupied private dwellings were separate houses, 77.5 per cent had four or more bedrooms and the average was 4.4 bedrooms. Dwellings averaged 2.9 registered motor vehicles each, so count the garage, carport and shed in your inventory, not just the house.

An acreage move is measured in distance as much as volume: from the furthest shed to the truck, and from the truck to the new front door. The rate stays simple: $125 to $169 an hour + GST for a moving truck and two professional movers, with extra movers and a larger truck available when the load calls for it.

On acreage, the trickiest part of the job is often the stretch between the road and the house. Before moving day we ask about:

• The gate. Its width, whether it opens fully, and any code, key or remote the crew will need.
• The driveway. Sealed or gravel, how steep it is, and how it holds up after rain. Low branches matter too in a suburb with this much bushland.
• Turning room. Whether the truck can turn near the house or will need to reverse out.
• The carry. If the truck can't safely reach the house, we plan the carry with trolleys and tell you about the $48 (incl. GST) truck-inaccessible driveway charge before you book.

Photos or a short video of the approach usually tell us what we need. If a route isn't safe for the truck or the crew, we'll say so and plan another way rather than risk it. Animals are worth a mention too: dogs and horses are happier secured away from an open gate and a reversing truck.

Queensland Places, the University of Queensland's gazetteer, lists market gardens, poultry farms and horse breeding in Chandler. Whether yours is a working property or not, list what's outside the house as carefully as what's inside:

• Outdoor settings and barbecues. These move like any other furniture. Gas bottles, fuel and chemicals can't go on our truck, so set them aside before moving day.
• Workshop and garage. Tool chests, benches, shelving and boxed equipment, with sizes and approximate weights for anything bulky.
• Heavy pieces. Gym equipment, safes and stone-topped tables are assessed individually. Each item over 90 kg is $48 including GST.
• Stable and garden gear. Saddles, rugs, pots and garden tools can be packed and moved with the household. Ride-on mowers, machinery and anything needing a forklift are assessed individually, and some may need a specialist carrier.

Leaving acreage is a good time to let things go. Brisbane City Council's Chandler Resource Recovery Centre is at 728 Tilley Road, close to the Sleeman Sports Complex. It is one of four council resource recovery centres, open from 6.30am to 5.45pm every day, public holidays included. Residential quantities of recycling can be dropped off free in vehicles under 4.5 tonnes combined gross vehicle mass, and general and green waste go in with a waste voucher or a fee.

If you'd rather not spend weekends on trailer runs, our junk removal service collects furniture, mattresses, whitegoods, boxes and clutter. You pay for time plus disposal by actual weight and type, with a minimum disposal charge of $95 including GST, and recyclables go to recycling where practical. Chandler's best-known landmark is the Sleeman Sports Complex at the corner of Old Cleveland and Tilley Roads. Built for the 1982 Commonwealth Games, it includes an aquatic centre seating 4,300 and the 1,500-seat Chandler Theatre, plus a Park 'n' Ride. Vehicles enter from two points on Tilley Road and one on Old Cleveland Road.

If you live nearby and your moving date falls on a major event at the complex, allow for extra traffic around those entries and check current road information before the day.

Chandler also has a small commercial area along Old Cleveland Road, added when the former suburb of Capalaba West became part of Chandler in 2010. Chandler sits where Brisbane meets the Redlands, with Gumdale, Ransome, Birkdale, Capalaba, Burbank and Belmont around it.

• Into the Redlands. Tingalpa Creek separates Brisbane from Redland City, and Old Cleveland Road crosses it into Capalaba. Moves into the Redlands start on the doorstep.
• Next door. Gumdale is directly north. Acreage to acreage means two sets of gates and driveways to plan.
• Into the city. Old Cleveland Road heads west through Carindale and Camp Hill towards inner Brisbane.
• The Gold Coast. Old Cleveland Road has an interchange with the Gateway Motorway, which joins the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Eight Mile Plains. We move between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in both directions.
