Fig Tree Pocket removalists for large family homes

Fig Tree Pocket is about 13 kilometres by road south-west of the Brisbane CBD, on a bend where the Brisbane River wraps around three sides of the suburb. The Centenary Motorway runs along its north-western edge. Inside that boundary, the housing is remarkably uniform. At the 2021 Census, 99.4 per cent of occupied homes were separate houses and 76.9 per cent had four or more bedrooms. The average was 4.1 bedrooms, against 3.2 across Queensland.

The University of Queensland's Queensland Places history describes the suburb's homes as amply proportioned, on generous blocks. For a removalist, that adds up to volume. Moving a home like that is rarely a quick morning job. It is a full household, plus a garage, plus whatever lives outside.

So we plan these moves around the size of the property, not a suburb average. The rate stays simple: $125 to $169 an hour + GST for a moving truck and two professional movers. The crew and truck are then matched to the job.

Planning a big-home move

Large-home moves go better when the work is split into stages. We can help with any of them.

  • Pack ahead. Our packing service can pack the kitchen, books, glassware and art the day before, so moving day is spent loading rather than wrapping.
  • Size the crew. A standard crew is two or three movers. For a five-bedroom house, extra movers or a larger truck can shorten the day. We confirm the crew and truck before you book.
  • Label by room. Mark each carton with its destination room. At the new home, the crew places furniture and cartons where they belong, and our unpacking team can set up the rooms you need first.
  • Keep the valuables with you. Jewellery, documents, passports, medication and keys travel in your car, not on the truck.

There is no fixed item limit on our trucks. What matters is volume, weight and access, so the more complete your inventory, the more accurate your quote.

Garages, outdoor settings and the rest of the property

On a large block, a real share of the move sits outside the house. List it separately so nothing is missed on the day.

  • Outdoor furniture. Dining settings, sun lounges, barbecues and large planters. Give dimensions and rough weights for stone or concrete pieces.
  • Garage and storage. Shelving, tools, bikes, sports gear and stored cartons add volume quickly.
  • Heavy pieces. Gym equipment, pool tables, safes and stone-topped tables are assessed individually. Each item over 90 kg is $48 including GST. See heavy item moves.
  • More than one building. If there is a studio, granny flat or second garage, tell us how the truck reaches each one.

Some things can't travel. Chemicals, gas bottles, fuel and other flammables are excluded, so drain the fuel from mowers and leave pool chemicals for proper disposal. For furniture you no longer need, our junk removal service can take it away, charged on time plus disposal by weight and type.

Riverfront homes, Jesmond Road and the 2011 flood

Queensland Places singles out Jesmond Road for its prestige riverfront properties. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is on the same road, at number 708. It opened in 1927, covers 18 hectares and also welcomes visitors by boat from the city. If you live along Jesmond Road, give us the exact entry and a landmark that helps the crew find a driveway set back from the street.

The river shapes more than the views. In January 2011, the Brisbane River flooded the east side of Fig Tree Pocket, including Mandalay and Donatello Streets, and most of the suburb's open spaces and parks. Afterwards, Brisbane City Council changed its planning rules so flood-affected homes could be raised as high as 9.5 metres, up from 8.5 metres. Where a house has been lifted or rebuilt with living areas upstairs, there are more stairs between the furniture and the truck.

  • Count every flight, including external stairs to the main living level. Where a stair charge applies, it is $48 including GST per flight.
  • Describe the driveway: gradient, surface, gate width and turning space. If the truck can't use it, a $48 (incl. GST) truck-inaccessible driveway charge applies and we plan the carry.
  • Mind the lawn. Riverfront grass can be soft after rain, so the truck stays on hard standing and the crew carries from there.

Getting in and out of the pocket

With the river on three sides, most Fig Tree Pocket moves start or finish with a drive to the Centenary Motorway (M5). Where you're heading decides the rest.

  • Into the city and inner west. The Centenary Motorway becomes the Western Freeway at Kenmore and meets Moggill Road, the main road through Indooroopilly and Taringa.
  • Close on the map. Chelmer sits just across the river and Pullenvale is a short run west. The river means the Chelmer drive is longer than it looks, and at both ends the access work usually takes longer than the trip.
  • The Gold Coast. We move between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in both directions. From the western suburbs, the usual route runs south on the Centenary Motorway to the Logan Motorway, then east to the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Loganholme.
  • Interstate. For moves beyond Queensland, see our interstate removals.

  • Photograph the driveway, gate and turning space, and count the stairs to the main living level.
  • Drain fuel from mowers and set aside gas bottles, chemicals and pool supplies, which can't go on the truck.
  • Decide what to pack ahead, and book packing for the day before if you want it.
  • Label cartons by destination room and keep valuables and documents with you.
