Hendra removalists for bigger homes

Hendra lies roughly six kilometres north-east of the Brisbane CBD. It's bounded by Schulz Canal and the Airport Link motorway to the north, the Southern Cross Way to the east, and the racecourses at Eagle Farm and Doomben to the south. Its streets are lined with jacarandas and royal poincianas.

It is a suburb of houses, and big ones. In 2021, separate houses made up 80.1 per cent of Hendra's occupied private dwellings, compared with 74.8 per cent across Queensland. Half of all homes, 50.1 per cent, had four or more bedrooms, and the average was 3.6 bedrooms against 3.2 statewide. Close to three-quarters were owner-occupied.

That makes volume the main question in a Hendra quote. A four- or five-bedroom house with a garage and outdoor areas takes more time, crew and truck space than the bedroom count suggests. The rate stays simple: $125 to $169 an hour + GST for a moving truck and two professional movers.

A good Hendra quote starts with a complete inventory. The fuller the list, the closer the plan matches the day.

• Room by room. List each bedroom, living area and study, then the garage, shed, patio and anything under the house.
• Crew to match. Our standard crew is two to three movers, with the truck and crew matched to the job. Additional movers and larger trucks are available, and the charges are confirmed before booking.
• No fixed item limit. We don't cap the number of pieces. Heavy and oversized items are assessed individually.
• Pack before the day. A packed house loads faster. Our packing team can do the whole house, or just the kitchen and fragile items.
• More than one address. If some furniture goes to storage, family or a second home, each extra pick-up or drop-off is $48 including GST.

In a suburb of houses, the garage is often the last space packed and the first one underestimated. Tools, bikes, outdoor furniture, gym equipment and garden gear all need room on the truck.

• Sort it early. Decide what's moving, what's being sold and what's going to the tip before you request a quote.
• Leave the dangerous goods. We can't carry hazardous goods. Chemicals, gas bottles and flammables such as fuel need to be used up or disposed of separately.
• Clear the rest with us. Our junk removal takes old furniture, mattresses, whitegoods, boxes and clutter. It's charged on time plus disposal by actual weight and type, from a minimum disposal fee of $95 including GST, with recyclables taken to recycling where practical.
• Appliances and heavy gear. Fridges, washing machines and other appliances are $48 including GST each. So is anything over 90 kg, such as a home gym station.

Some of Hendra's oldest homes once sat on very large blocks. Glengariff, on Derby Street, is a two-storey brick house built in 1888–89 with a three-storey entry tower, listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, and its grounds once covered about five acres. Brisbane City Council's record for Inspice, on Zillman Road, describes a timber Federation house from 1900 set on more than three acres, later subdivided and sold off in the 1920s and 1930s.

Homes like these, and plenty of newer ones, hold the furniture that needs the most planning:

• Pianos. Piano relocation is $149 including GST on top of the hourly rate, subject to an access assessment. Send photos of the stairs and the route.
• Antiques and fine timber. Wrapped in quilted blankets and furniture pads, strapped in place, and carried rather than dragged.
• Hoisting. Where it's genuinely the safest route and the site allows it, hoisting is $48 including GST per item.
• Specialist items. Our heavy item service assesses safes, stone and oversized pieces first. If something needs handling beyond what our crew and equipment can do safely, we'll tell you plainly.

Hendra has racing in its history. The Australian Dictionary of Biography records trainer Vic Rail's stables at Hendra, close to both the Eagle Farm and Doomben tracks. The racecourses still shape local traffic on big days.

• Check the race calendar. The Brisbane Racing Club advises that during the Stradbroke season and other feature events, Racecourse Road may be closed at Eagle Farm and Hampden Street at Doomben. Living on Hendra's southern side? Pick a non-feature day.
• Flying out. Brisbane Airport lies beyond the Southern Cross Way on Hendra's eastern edge. Book the move so the truck is loaded well before you need to leave.
• Next door. Moves to Ascot, Clayfield or Hamilton are short, but a house-to-house move still means stairs and access at both ends.
• Further away. We move between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in both directions and offer interstate removals.
